Psalms 116:15 Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints. Betty Dugger Smith entered her eternal home on July 10, 2025.
Betty was born in Elizabethton, Tn. to Herman Dugger and Mary Younce on January 9, 1949. She later moved to Gray, Tn, where she lived with her husband Bob.
Betty loved to be surrounded by her family and friends and was an amazing cook, always feeding anyone who needed a delicious hot meal. She enjoyed gardening and planting flowers. Her yard displayed her beautiful flowers and she looked forward every spring to bringing life to her raised vegetable beds. She enjoyed driving the roads of East Tennessee, earning the nickname Betty Petty, and took her time when hiking mountain trails and visiting gardens, appreciating plants and teaching others what they were. She knitted and sewed gorgeous clothing, was an avid photographer, reader, and artist, and loved good music, frequently going to live music festivals in Tennessee, Virginia, and North Carolina.
Betty would want everyone to remember her as a daughter of God. She displayed His love to everyone she touched and let them see His light in her life. A faithful charter member of Cornerstone Church in Johnson City since February 1984, she ministered to many people by cooking and delivering food to families in times of need and served as an usher and any other function in the church where there was a need. She worked at Texas Instruments for many years then later becoming the manager of the company store. She was most remembered as “Miss Betty” by the students at Gray Elementary School where she was a Teacher’s Assistant for several years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman Dugger and Mary Younce, and her brother Barry Dugger.
Betty is survived by her husband of 44 years, Bobby H. Smith; 3 children, Kimberly Proffitt (David), Dr. Bobby H. Smith II (Laura), and Christa Anderson, (Stacey); 8 grandchildren, Paul, Tabby, Sarah, Mary, Clarissa, Hannah (Jake), Avery, and Claire; her sister Susan Fletcher (Tom) and several nieces and nephews.
Our deepest gratitude and thanks go out to the dedicated and caring staff at Lakebridge Nursing Center.
The family is receiving friends at Cornerstone Church, 120 Cornerstone Drive in Johnson City, Monday evening, July 14, from 5-7, with a Celebration of Life service beginning at 7.
